By Aaron Huber
The annual Juvenile Showcase held at Calder Race Course features a special program devoted to 2 year old racing. A highlight of this card is the all-stakes pick four cumulating in the Affirmed Stakes, the second leg of the Florida Stallion Stakes series. All of the following horses should receive serious consideration when constructing your pick four wagers.
Race 7 Fasig Tipton Turf Dash (5 Furlongs – Turf)
#1 Tatao’s Widcat
Comes into this race after a disappointing fourth place finish after trying allowance company for the first time. Tato’s Widcat broke his maiden in his debut race with a 92 speed figure. He had a good work over the Calder turf course going 3 furlongs in 36 3/5. The rail draw also may help, which is producing winners at a 19% clip in turf sprints.
#7 Madman Diaries
Shipping in from Saratoga so you know his connections are serious about winning this one. Madman Diaries is trained and partially owned by Wesley Ward, a stellar horseman with a reputation for getting 2 year olds ready for big races on any surface. This horse likes to go to the front and stay there which isn’t a bad plan for a race with such a short distance. His speed figures are among the best of this group, and should leave the rest of them in the dust.
Race 8 Seacliff Stakes (1 Mile – Dirt)
#1 Andersonstate
Andersonstate has a versatile running style and can go out to the front or close. He was able to pass several horses in the stretch last time out. After hitting the board in allowance company this spot seems like an appropriate step up.
#5 Elissa’sroyalimage
Making his seventh start here, Elissa’sroyalimage owns the most racing experience. He got up late two back to win going over the slop in an allowance race and earned a speed figure of 90, one of the fastest here. First time blinkers also adds a bit of intrigue to this one. Horse Bet
Race 9 Catcharisingstar Stakes (5 Furlongs – Turf – Fillies)
#2 Livingtheblues
Her sire Mr. Livingstone is by El Prado, so turf running is in the bloodlines. Livingtheblues won her last race by 7 ¼ lengths in spectacular style over a field of eight 50k maiden claimers.
#4 Ayoumilove
This filly flashed some serious speed in her penultimate start and is a two time winner. Her last race was a likely bounce off a career high speed figure.
#9 Aroyalsweet
Never bet against Wesley Ward when it comes to juvenile turf races. Aroyalsweet was previously based at Keeneland but has been training at Calder since July and put in a nice 4 furlong bullet work over the grass last week. Alex Solis flies in from the west coast to pick up the mount, looks ready. Track Betting
#11 No More Yogi’s
Broke her maiden last time out going for a 50k tag. Also owned and trained by Wesley Ward this one has been training nice over the turf at Calder.
Race 10 Florida Stallion Affirmed Stakes (7 Furlongs – Dirt)
#3 Rough’n Royal
Broke his maiden and won by over 13 lengths in his last start going 7 furlongs under a strong hand ride. Rough’n Royal fired a bullet for his last workout over the dirt at Calder, and apparently loves the surface.
#4 Vee’s Accolade
In his last start he finished third in the 6 furlong Dr. Fager Stakes here at Calder, but was placed 5th though disqualification due to some rough riding and bumping. Saratoga Horse Betting
#5 Gourmet Dinner
Won the Dr. Fager, the first leg of the Florida Stallion Stakes, and was the second choice to a heavily bet Little Drama, who isn’t appearing here. He is undefeated in two starts and is simply the fastest of the bunch.
