Check the Label won Saturday’s Grade 1, $250,000 Garden City Breeders’ Cup by three-quarters of a length at Belmont Park. It was a masterful performance by the animal, which was ridden to victory by Ramon Dominguez. The jockey has delivered some impressive results this year. The race on Saturday was just another example of the skill of both the rider and the horse.
Even with a bit of a blunder half way through, the team recovered, and pulled through victorious. Check the Label looked great on the track, carrying the hopes of fans to triumph. The 3-year-old filly responded to Dominguez’s command to push on ahead for the win. Blowing away all the competition and winning races has been what Check the Label has excelled at all year. There have been three previous races in which the filly has managed to win in the same fashion. Saturday marked her fourth straight stakes victory in the Garden City Breeders’ Cup.
Dominguez was forced to steady at the five-sixteenths pole and she dropped back to next-to-last. Then they made their move, bursting ahead and overcoming the rest of the pack. Check the Label quickly moved into the winning position. This happened after coming to the quarter pole and being moved to the outside with a clear shot at the finish. Check the Label accelerated. The rest of the racers were caught unaware as they were overtaken. The competition battled on, Snow Top Mountain rallied to be second, one length ahead of Gitchee Goomie.
Check the Label covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.41 over a yielding inner turf course, returning $4 as the favorite. The rest of the year looks promising for the hose. Trainer Graham Motion was happy with the way the horse ran on the soft track, and is hopeful for the future. Keep your eyes open for this racehorse, as it certainly tends to deliver.
