Gio Ponti has delivered some quality results this year. There have been many races in which the superb animal has laid down its claim. The future is looking bright for the Gio Ponti, who will pass Sunday’s $1 million Woodbine Mile soon. After, however, he will opt to train up for a smaller race later in the year. The competition is looking fierce, and trainer Christophe Clement wants to make sure that Gio Ponti is in top form for the meet.
So far it looks like the next race that the team will be in is the Grade 1, $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on October 9th. Clement said that the race would be used to gauge the animal’s performance. Though things have proved promising this year, there are still many things that need to be improved in order to lay down a solid record for 2010.
The end goal is to take place in one of the big races in November, either the Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf or the Breeders’ Cup Classic on dirt. Luckily, Gio Ponti is good on both surfaces. Clement said he wants to avoid having any surprises, and just deal with the future as it comes.
Gio Ponti is 2 for 2 at a mile on turf, and has a similar record on dirt. He is coming off a second-place finish in the Arlington Million. The winner has been powerful in all his races this year. In addition to this year’s victories, he won the Grade 1 Kilroe Handicap at Santa Anita last year, and the Grade 3 Hill Prince at Belmont as a 3-year-old. Everything is coming to a head for Clements this year. The trainer is now looking to ease Gio Ponti into a few races geared towards older horses as the season comes to an end.
