Changing Skies will be a Heavy Favorite in the Long Island Handicap

Now that the Breeders’ Cup is over, we can get back to handicapping some of the other great racing going on around the country. Though the winter racing at Aqueduct is mainly known for races run on the dirt inner-track, grass racing is still in full swing. This Saturday brings the annual renewal of the grade 3 Long Island Handicap at 1 ½ miles on the turf for fillies and mares. Blame’s Stud Fee Increases

There were some increases in fees amongst the top stallions at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky after the races this weekend. With the inclusion of Blame, the only horse to have beaten Zenyatta, the group seized the opportunity to make a bit of extra money. Afleet Express Retires

It is always a joyous day when a horse is retired after a great race. Legacy intact and record preserved, often early retirement is due to injuries or if a horse has simply failed to perform up to standard. Whatever the reason for retirement, one thing that is certain is that horses will enjoy the remainder of its life. Well, the young horse Afleet Express has been retired after an enduring injury inhibited his performance. Goldikova And Zenyatta Deliver

The races on Saturday were great. The show that Zenyatta gave was phenomenal, even though she lost. There was nothing that she could have done against the powerful Blame, who ended up taking the race. However, the fact remains that the horse will go down as one of the best racehorses in history. Goldikova’s Three-peat Overshadowed at Breeders Cup

While Zenyatta was the marquee name in this year’s Breeders’ Cup, the mare that was overlooked was the brilliant mare Goldikova, who became the first horse in history to win three Breeders’ Cup races.

Two hours before Zenyatta pranced on the track for her attempt at history, Goldikova ran down the field in the Mile, holding off the late running Gio Ponti by 1 ¾ lengths under another stellar ride by Olivier Pelsier.

Zenyatta’s First Loss

During the races over the weekend, all eyes were turned to the race that Zenyatta ran against Blame for a shot at a 20-0 record. Despite her best efforts however, there was simply no chance that Zenyatta was going to defeat Blame. The two horses delivered solid results all day long, and both did very well. However, it was Blame who took that race and is now in contention for the Horse of the Year award. Zenyatta has delivered excellent races all throughout her career. Even with a comeback from retirement, she has been held in high esteem across the nation.
