Quality Road is Back, Or is He?

By Michael Dempsey

Quality Road was back in the winners circle on Saturday, taking the $750,000 Woodward (G1) at Saratoga, his fourth win in five starts this year.

His lone loss this year came on Aug. 7 at Saratoga where the Todd Pletcher trainee set the early fractions and was caught in the final few jumps to get beaten by Blame by a head in a tough loss.

Unusual Suspect Springs Back

After coming in ninth in the $1 million Pacific Classic, Unusual Suspect returns in Saturday’s $75,000 Windy Sands Handicap at Del Mar. There are several reasons that the horse was brought back to the Windy Sands race, one of them being difficulty. The competition is certainly a bit easier at Del Mar, but the track surface may be another cause. The 1-mile synthetic main track is a huge draw for Unusual Suspect, being that the majority of his victories are at that distance, or 1 1/16 miles. Pletcher Going into the Spinaway with Half of the Field

By Aaron Huber

If Todd Pletcher doesn’t hit the board in this Sunday’s upcoming Spinaway Stakes for 2 year old fillies, just call him unlucky. Four of the eight entrants to this race are trained by Pletcher, but there could have been more. He actually had nine of the 21 nominations to the Spinaway before the draw. But it won’t be all about Pletcher on Sunday. Bob Baffert, Rick Dutrow, and Steve Aussmusen are also sending out runners making this race just as much about the trainers as the horses themselves. Here’s a look at the field.

Forego, Woodward Highlight Saturday’s Spa Action

By Michael Dempsey

The Labor Day weekend is the final hurrah for the Saratoga meeting, and horseplayers will find Saturday’s card good enough to skip the cookout and the beach and fire up the wagering account.

The 11-race card features four stakes races including a pair of Grade 1 races, the $250,000 Forego and the $750,000 Woodward. Saratoga Racing

Quality Road is the headliner in the Woodward and figures to be sent off at miniscule odds. The Todd Pletcher trainee has won three of four starts this year, the lone loss a tough beat in the Whitney Handicap (G1) where the colt was caught at the wire by Blame.

NY Breds Make Final Stand

By Joey Adams

The final overnight stake of the Saratoga meet will be run Friday. The $70,000 Saratoga Dew is restricted to New York-bred runners, and serves as the lead-up to a strong closing weekend featuring seven graded stakes. This nine-furlong affair has drawn a small field of six, and if not for its name one could presume this to be an allowance or optional claimer. Consider that only one starter in the field has a last-race Beyer Speed Figure above 70, and not surprisingly that entrant is the morning-line favorite.

She broke from the gates and ran clear of the pack under the expert guidance of the ever eager Javier Castellano. The duo ran unrivaled for more than three-quarters of a mile, repelling any challenges from the other horses. Read the rest of this entry »

Value Can Be Found on the Grass

By Joey Adams

An overflow of entries has resulted in the $70,000 Riskaverse being split into two divisions Thursday at Saratoga. Both divisions offer full fields and plenty of value opportunities for the handicapper. The first division goes as Race 4 and it has drawn 13 three-year-old fillies, including one Also Eligible and two Main Track Only entrants. This race will be run at one mile over the inner turf course, and the handicapper should note that of 32 races over this course and distance at the meet, only 5 betting favorites have found the winner’s circle.
