Horse Betting World

ARISE SIR TODD

If Mr Pletcher was training in the UK those are the words that would be ringing through his ears at the end of this season.

He is poised to have a stellar season going by what we are seeing at Gulfstream Park. He has to be, Michael Dickinson excepted, one of the bet preppers of a horse running first time out after a layoff. We have not even gotten to the gold in the stable yet, that will be produced for the Derby prep races. Just watch the Bluegrass stakes at Keeneland, he will pop up with a couple of late bloomers there for sure.

Another trainer to follow down in Florida: Eddie Keaneally especially when he has Julian Leparoux up. I will be at Gulfstream for the rest of the week where The Whisperer’s new overseas TV deal will be announced…

Oh Canada!

Four Canadian representatives collected Eclipse awards on a very special evening in Miami last Monday.

Myself as part of the HRRN Horse Racing Radio Network for our coverage of the 2010 Breeders’ Cup.

Frank Stronach as leading breeder.

Brian Troop as NTRA/DRF Handicapper Champion.

Omar Moreno Top Apprentice Jockey based at Woodbine.

Yes folks it’s the year of the Beaver … Olympic Hockey Gold now more titles than Zenyatta heading North.

A great evening was had by all, the speach by Uncle Mo’s owner confirmed what I have been saying for a long time now: we are surely looking at a future Triple Crown Champion.

The horse racing year kicks into gear this week with the increasingly popular Sunshine Millions series, Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita providing the years’ first highlight reel races. See you at the Park folks……

HAPPY NEW YEAR ITS A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HORSE

2011 Has already started off with a big bang for THE HORSEWHISPERER.

On January 17th myself and the rest of the Horse Racing Radio Network Broadcast team will receive the coveted Eclipse award for our live broadcast at the 2010 Breeders’ Cup to be presented in front of our horse racing peers in Miami Beach.

Only the best of the best bring the latest news to you on HBW.

The award is a great honour with a tremendous lot of travel and sheer hard work gone into presenting the broadcasts and reports from around the country. To be rewarded with an Eclipse means to work that much harder in bringing this great sport to a younger audience.

What else for 2011 ….. only one thing I am looking forward to and the money is down ….. is UNCLE MO winning the Derby, then moving on to scoop the TRIPLE CROWN.

Of all the races and works I covered that week at Churchill Downs, He impressed me the most, in fact the most since Spectacular Bid. Lookout, it’s going to be a stellar year with huge stories even bigger than The Horsewhisperer and the Eclipse award.

Told You So

For several months now I have been castigating the Santa Anita operation for changing the track surface. It’s like a sportsteam changing the coach …..ok change him but you have to bring in someone who is going to do better.

I will say it again, it’s not the surface causing the problem, it’s the drainage inclement adverse weather patterns that are the problem.

The canceling of work sessions on the track this week endorses my point to the full. They are surely in trouble of losing just as many days racing as with the synthetic track.

Other than that LITTLE MO FOR THE TRIPLE CROWN….. Merry Xmas to all our readers.

What to look forward too

Breeders’ is over for another year with a million stories and may I say memories galore.

What next ????? …….. well just on the horizon is the reopening of Santa Anita with of course a new surface in place.

Out goes the 21st century thinking and back to the plain old dirt. The surface was never ever the problem, dont care what anybody says. It’s the drainage that caused all those lost days of racing and an inclement weather pattern leading to flooding of the track. If the drainage hasn’t been addressed folks, then look out: we are in for a stormy time down Arcadia way.

Having got proficient in handicapping and clocking with the synthetic surface, now it’s back to square one recording all the different facets of the track. Which, believe me, will be the cause of a few public arguements. Not to worry folks, EXCHANGE BETTING is arriving, the saviour of all things horse racing.

An interesting new year approaches to say the least………H.W.

SO NEAR YET SO FAR…

You had to feel for the connections of Zenyatta and of course the public at large.

I got interviewed just before the off in the Chuchill Downs paddock of the big race by a British TV crew.
“Your thoughts Whisperer?”

It’s all down to Mike Smith, he has the horse …. he has to time his run to perfection. He cannot make a mistake like he did on Mine That Bird in the Preakness last year.

Well did he make a mistake ???? The jury is still out in some quarters but here is something to ponder on over the next few days.

The gate loaders went on record saying “No favours for any horse that plays up at the start”

No fractions were given on the big screen outdoor TV’s, plus the race caller never made any. Unusual to say the least, the splits being available for every other race.

I even asked the presenter of AT THE RACES if he had the splits; he in turn asked his producer in London UK, non were available.

When you have a horse with a closing running style like Zenyatta knowing the splits are crucial, yes the jock should be the judge of pace, but all of a sudden he is put in a position that he is unfamiliar with.

Why would their be no splits, no cooperation from the gate staff…BLAME is a local horse, a terrific local horse, home turf favouritism….all will be revealed in a movie coming to a movie theater near you………..H.W.

Breeders’ Cup 2010

The Whisperer is on site folks for the forthcoming showdown on dirt and turf.
Attended the morning workout along with several hundred people all looking to see Zenyatta in action. She did not
dissapoint taking a keen hold with her work rider aboard. She milked all the attention just like the super star she is
about to come.
Goldikova looked and worked like a million dollars, Paco boy was behind her like he has been all season.
Workforce impressed, looked in good health, didn’t seem to be any concerns about the turf. A lot of people suggesting he will be scratched if there is no rain, there was never any indication off that by his handlers.
Mike Smith, the first lady’s jockey, was in attendance and made reference to a promo wager that is on offer by an ADW
www.racing2day.com. They are offering to refund up to $25 win wager if your horse finishes second to the first lady. Not bad pick, a longshot and you have your wager severly hedged…….more tomorrow live from Churchill Downs, Kentucky.

So let the games begin………….H.W.

Times, They Are A-changing

Keenland race track and the whole experience of a day at the races is to be savoured by all.

However changes seem to be afoot at this prestigeous track.

I can remember writing in a column this time last year “LOOK OUT GODOLPHIN IS COMING”.

Why should that bother Keeneland, a non-profit organisation? Well, Godolphin bought rival sales company Fasig Tipton just down the road, they embarked on getting the world’s best bloodstock through their doors instead of Keeneland’s, plus they are encouraging the world’s best buyers to attend with travel incentives and a multi million dollar renovation of Lexington’s sales venue. Wow, what a job they have done as well having attended the Standarbred yearling sales last week.

Also attending Keeneland last week it is obvious they are under pressure, they are charging for parking for the first time in a while, which is causing huge back ups to get into the quaint venue. The head of communications who was in the post less than a year, resigned and now the president has moved on to become the head of Equibase, the jockey club controlled data house.

Competition is now in abundance for all facets of racing, now is not the time to surrender, it’s the time to promote and attract a new generation of players.

Keeneland is, was at the forefront of hospitality and providing that raceday experience. Here’s hoping it adjusts with the times………Stay tuned for the Whisperer’s inside info for the forthcoming Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs.

THE LUNATICS ARE RUNNING THE ASSYLUM

The hits just keep on coming to this beautifull industry and sport of ours.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in its infinite wisdom is looking to make all ADW’s (online pari-mutuel platforms) to be licensed to operate in Kentucky to the tune of 30k a year plus put up a bond of 500,000k.

These are the guys that have to buy the signal for every track they display, go out and get the players to play the tracks, buy marketing and promos, now they are stung with another added cost.

These companies are already federally regulated and screened by the horse racing protection bureau but thats not good enough for Kentucky.

Well here is the bleak forecast according to the HW: the KHRC wont have to worry about protecting their players in the future because there wont be any nor any ADW’s. That’s right, the tracks will close because of the less online action combined with the assanine view to slots. Oct 26th is the big day, D DAY for some …. OPERATION OVERKILL.

On a lighter note look for the Horse Whisperer at Churchill Downs Breeders’ Cup week, he will be live from the track every day. He is in fine form nailing Secret Timber at the weekend…
