A STAR IS BORN

By The Horse Whisperer

Stardate…Wed Sept 23rd 2010
Mission…To Win The Little Brown Jug
Location…Cloud 9,10,11 Delaware County Fair Grounds.

Rock N Roll Heaven destroyed a quality field of pacers in the second leg of the pacing Triple Crown, broke the heat record then equalled the time in the second round race, which is also the WORLD RECORD to be crowned Little Brown Jug Champion.

Quite a feat considering races are run on the same afternoon.

Now he is in another universe looking towards Pocono Downs and the Breeders’ Crown.

Harness racing often takes the back seat to Thoroughbred racing but a lot can be learnt of each other.

Yesterday a midweek 50,000 crowd enjoyed racing around a half mile county fair ground.

How can that be? How can we duplicate that for thoroughbred racing? Can we learn something? Are we willing to learn something?

Lets bring the barriers down and cross market, communicate and lets work together.

I have owned both thoroughbred and Harness horses and learned and enjoyed from both experiences.

Chad Brown, the Breeders’ Cup winning trainer started his carear with Paul Kelley at Saratoga Harness track, gaining a wealth of knowledge in horsemanship.

We do need stars in any sport and once in a while one pops along, enjoy them while you can, before they are transported to that eutopia of the stud farm.

Lessons to be learnt for sure….. tune in next week.

Same time, same place……

Are Slots the Saviour of Horse Racing?

By The Horse Whisperer

This is the million dollar question.

Just to explain all monies generated by slots a percentage is mandated back into horse racing prize money.
Does it work? you’re dam right it does, take a look at Canada……

Woodbine is a facility second to none, the prize money is stupendous. The likes of US conditioners Steve Assmussen, Wesley Ward James Bond have strong strings stabled their.

A waiting list of 6,000 stall applications tells the story, build it and they will come.

Dresden Raceway, a summer Harness track had its annual stakes day, 14 races each 25k apiece thanks to slots. The irony is, if you go to any Canadian casino you will see coaches full of people from Kentucky, Ohio and the like. If slots were available in those states the racing would be in a far better state.

Until that happens, tracks have to work harder to encourage the younger generation, lots with disposable income to come to the track. Novel promos like live bands, night racing at Churchill are only a stop gap. We all have to do our part we need personalities a demystifying of the form guides and across the board medication control.

Plus lets put a big dosage of FUN back into the game…

A steep task, are we up to it? You’re dam right we are.

More from the “The Horse Whisperer” next week an early look at the Breeders’ Cup and the Prix de le Arc De Triomphe.
