Rachel Alexandra Delivers as Expected

There was much speculation as to who would take the $400,000.00 purse at the Lady’s Secret Stakes for fillies and mares. Proving that she has better training, better lasting power, and the speed to take it, she defeated six opponents on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Last year’s Horse of the Year took its second straight win after suffering two losses to start the season. This beautiful animal handled itself masterfully in the track, it seemed to flow like water through the pack then break out for a strong lead that no one had a chance of taking.

It was an extremely hot day at the track, and many of the jockeys, along with the horses were suffering, at 90 degrees with humidity pushing the heat index past 100, many would question the sanity of the riders, but Rachel Alexandra prevailed. Calvin Borel led the charge, riding for trainer Steve Asmussen.

They took an easy lead, beating the only real competition, Queen Marth by three lengths. It started out differently, with Queen Martha setting the pace, and Rachel Alexandra trailing in second. Rounding into the home stretch, Calvin Borel pushed hard and the horse took off like a rocket, blasting out past the pack. Asmussen claims that the way the horse takes off for home so swiftly and smoothly will be the key to its future successes.

Big wins seeming to be her calling card, Rachel Alexandra has regained her composure quite nicely after the two losses that started the season. A previous win demonstrates just how much this horse can give. She rolled to a 10 1/2-length win in her previous outing, the Fleur De Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs.
