As always, horse racing is a sport subject to change. However, this time no one will be opposed to the change. The purses at the Santa Anita Derby track have been raised. The first race that will see the new prize is the April 9th, 2011 running. The raise to 1 million is part of a $450,000 stimulus package to Santa Anita’s stakes races for 3-year-olds.
This change is truly significant, as the Santa Anita is merely a prep race for many of the bigger races around the country. Earnings in graded stakes are the criteria for starting in the Derby if more than the maximum 20 horses enter the race, which has become commonplace in recent years. As such, there has been a rise in prices in the prep races as well. More notably, the Robert Lewis and the San Felip saw their purses increase from $150,000 to $250,000. This should make things a bit better for competitors, and help the track make a bit more money. As a result, there are sure to be many more horses racing next year.
In other news, Santa Anita has become the first track to honor the late Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel with a stakes race in his name. With the increase in purses bringing a few expected changes, you can expect to see some very impressive running during the races of the next few months. After all, there will not only be improvements because of the money. Horse Bet
