Brethren, the little brother of 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver was the star of the weekend among the three-year-old division, taking the $225,000 Sam F. Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs.
The colt was an impressive winner for trainer Todd Pletcher and owner WinStar Farm, the same connections as Super Saver.
The winner returned $3.80 as the betting choice, with the 31/1 longshot Too Experience completing a $65.40 exacta.
The other winners in the key Derby preps on Saturday were Anthony’s Cross ($18.60) taking the $250,000 Robert B. Lewis (G2), and Silver Medallion ($15.00) pulling off the mild upset in the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields.
Did we see the eventual Kentucky Derby winner on Saturday? In addition, do we head to the betting window to get some early betting action on the Run for the Roses?
I thought it was possible we might see a performance on Saturday that could send us to the Derby future wager for some early Derby horse wagering.
Instead, we saw Tapizar, the heavy favorite in the Robert B. Lewis fade to finish fifth, and Comma to the Top, the chalk in the El Camino Real Derby weaken to finish fourth.
I thought the best performance of the trio of races was the victory of Brethren in the Sam F. Davis, but the colt actually earned the lowest Beyer Speed Figure of the three winners.
The colt earned a 83, while Silver Medallion earned a 93, and Anthony’s Cross posted as 90.
Those numbers pale in comparison to the division leader Uncle Mo, who completed his two-year-old campaign with a Beyer Speed Figure of 108 winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last fall at Churchill Downs.
To Honor and Serve earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Remsen (G2) last November at Aqueduct.
Trained by hall of famer Bill Mott, the colt will likely make his three-year-old debut in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on Feb. 26.
The other runner taking betting action in the futures is the Nick Zito trained Dialed In, who made his stakes debut winning the $400,000 Holy Bull (G3), earning a Beyer of 96.
The colt was making just his second career start in the Holy Bull, having earned a Beyer of 75 in his maiden victory on Nov. 12 at Churchill Downs.
Perhaps we will see the future Kentucky Derby winner this upcoming weekend, as there are three more key Derby preps waiting for our horse wagering action.
On Saturday a solid field is lining up for the $300,000 Risen Star Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds. Among those pointing toward the race are Rogue Romance, who was third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last fall, Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) winner Santiva, and Lecomte (G3) winner Wilkinson.
On Sunday, it is the $150,000 San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita, and the $300,000 Southwest (G3) is on tap at Oaklawn Park on Monday.
