Turmoil At Saratoga Springs

One of the most prized tracks in the nation, Saratoga Springs in New York is preparing for a flurry of activity for the opening day. The Saratoga Race Course’s 142nd season is looking to be quite exciting, and it will surely draw the top racing names to the turf.

Venue is everything, different tracks ride differently, and trainers reserve specific horses for specific tracks. The scene at Saratoga Race Track is quite stressed; there is much that needs to be done before the first race day.

The NYRA, which is in charge of the track, has come under fire recently for several issues that call into question its governing capacities. There have been accusations that state the organization squandered a 25 million dollar loan. The NYRA claims that loan was needed to keep the track and company afloat while it waits for the racing season to kick in. It is expected that they will make millions during the next couple of months, hopefully enough to settle their debt.

Running through Sept. 6, the grand old track has added four days to its season at a time when other racing venues from Southern California to Kentucky are cutting dates and scaling down. Many worry that the crowds will not be as large as expected amidst controversy regarding the new mass marketing of the track.

Prized as one of the most prestigious meets in the sport, the Saratoga Racing season has long since been an event for the rich and famous. Taking place in the summer, the days are perfect and the races excellent, a picturesque backdrop and great racing make the perfect day for many. Saratoga showed some staying power last year when it’s attendance rose by 5% while other big name tracks around the nation saw theirs decline.
